The years 2000 – 2006 were a relatively fallow period both in terms of shows and finished work. In the summer of 2001, though, I created a series of pieces on found and lightweight paper using automatic gesture. Standing about an arm’s length from the paper pinned to the wall, I “attacked” the surface with charcoal sticks causing the charcoal to break and “explode” and occasionally tearing the paper. Of course this preceded 9/11, but the resemblance of my marks was eerily similar to the scenes of that day.
