At the opening of my show at the Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque a guest began asking me about my process. I explained that much of the process lies in trying to lose control in that I try not to think and let my hand and arm work independently. This is based on psychic automatism a creative method developed and used by the Surrealists and by Robert Motherwell. Rarely do I use that term anymore but have used anymore. The guest put it more succinctly when she said “So you try to get of your own way.” Reflecting on this further I realized how organically my paintings seem to develop now.
